Wedding venues in Hertfordshire may have noted a rising in winter weddings, as thrifty brides look to save money on their nuptials.

In an interview with the Scotsman, spokeswoman for Debenhams Michelle Dowdall explained how December and January are becoming almost as popular as June and July.

"Notable festive holiday dates such as Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are becoming as sought-after for weddings as any Saturday in June," she stated.

It was suggested this is due to many venues offering discounted rates as they consider the winter season as off-peak.

Ms Dowdall explained how the two-week period covering Christmas and New Year saw more couples registered for gifts than during a typical week in July.

It is estimated that getting hitched in the colder months of the year can see brides and grooms save as much as 20 per cent on their big day.

Research by Debenhams revealed some costs remain the same, such as the dress, wedding cake and rings, but others are substantially cheaper.

Out-of-season catering is on average only three-quarters the price, while, individuals can save around £1,500 on their venue.

Ms Dowdall explained how gift lists are reflecting the trend, as well as items being used to decorate reception halls.

"Couples are asking guests for blankets, throws, heavy-tog duvets and his and hers dressing gowns," the expert stated.

Meanwhile, Christmas trees and other festive pieces are used to dress wedding venues.

Debenhams noted that winter nuptials have almost doubled in the past year, with couples looking for ways to save cash while still holding their dream ceremony.

In January this year, the number of brides and grooms registering for gift lists rose by 89 per cent, compared with the same period in 2011.

It was recently reported by the Daily Telegraph that new figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed an increasing number of people are opting to get hitched between October and March.
