Couples planning nuptials at wedding venues in Hertfordshire have been advised to think carefully about their total budget before rushing into booking vendors.

In an article for the Boston Globe, celebrity event planner Mindy Weiss provided tips on how to reduce the cost of getting hitched.

She advised ladies not to get carried away and rush into hiring people before they have looked at the expected overall expense of the celebration.

"Slow down and really know how much money you have for food and alcohol. Figure out a location and then food and alcohol costs. That's your biggest chunk," Ms Weiss stated.

When it comes to supplying guests with drinks, it was suggested that an open bar can be very costly, so offering a signature drink instead could be a nice way to add a personal touch.

Alternatively, a "soft bar" was recommended, which includes beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks.

Ms Weiss warned couples against ordering too much cake as it is often left over and can soon become expensive if charged by the piece.

The expert urged people to order for eight per cent fewer individuals than are actually attending.

Another area where money can be saved is on cocktail platters served before the main meal.

According to Ms Weiss, although it is a good idea to provide family and friends with something to enjoy while they wait for their dinner, these should be simple and not overly abundant, as the sit-down meal is the most important event.

Referrals were recommended when looking for a DJ to play at receptions, while Ms Weiss claimed live music is always a good choice for ceremonies.

Debbie Geller, owner of Los Angeles-based event design company Geller Events, recently said  entertainment is one of the most important parts of a wedding, as it will be remembered by guests, the Huffington Post reported.
